The Land Map

How it works

The Land Map shows the percentage and actual areas of Broad Habitats within the cities, towns and parishes allocated to each 10km x 10km Community in The Life Map.  The information is drawn from the Land Cover Map 2007 produced by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.  Land use either influences or is influenced by every Sustainable Life Indicator and satellite imagery is now being produced at an increasing resolution and increasingly accessible to provide quantitative assessments and the ability to measure change.

We have the capability to produce Sub Habitat maps showing the next 20 land uses that align with the formal UK Habitat Classification and international reporting.  The maps can also quantify linear features such as hedgerows and watercourses as well as including the World Protected Areas identified within the United Nations Environment Programme.
